Sometimes life gets in the way of living. Besides being bombarded with kids, work, and other mundane activities throughout the day, we try our damnedest to manage it all -- trying hard to stay afloat and hold our heads above water to keep from drowning.
Life is as life does! And if not managed properly, it will soon spiral out of control, leaving us in a pit of unsuccessful attempts. However, while we at times can’t control what happens to us, we can control how we react to it.
No matter what life throws, successful people use it as a stepping stone or a curve from which to learn. They also use it as a building block to gain the necessary knowledge that will take them a step closer to the ultimate prize -- success. They learn to make smart, calculated decisions that will have an impact on their today and tomorrow.
These individuals live a life that is free of regrets because they know they will have multiple chances to get it right -- a second, third or fourth time even. When the going gets tough, so do the accomplished.
Need a little advice to help reset your path and achieve successful living? -- Try these four steps….
Set Specific Goals
Those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Set goals that will place you a step further toward reaching your dreams. Your goals should be high enough to raise your performance and level of expectation, motivate you to get to the next step, and force you to draw from a place of inner creativity that needs to be unearthed. Most importantly, your goals should be SMART...
- Specific (simple, sensible, significant)
- Measurable (meaningful, motivating)
- Achievable (agreed, attainable)
- Relevant (reasonable, realistic and, results-based)
-Time-Bound (time-based, time-limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive)
Always Follow Your Passion
Sure we all have a passion that drives us, that unyielding desire that will not go away. Though at times, the initial spark that fueled us can diminish little by little until we are left with nothing but puffs of smoke. Successful people keep that drive no matter what happens, regardless of what roadblocks arise. The successful may stumble and fall, but they learn to fall on their back. Why? Because if they can look up, they can most certainly get up. They learn the power of falling forward.
If you were to ask me the key to success, I would say to double up on your failure rate. Each successfully failed attempt brings you one step closer to your passion --- your goal --- your dream -- your success.
Surround Yourself With Cheerleaders
We all need people who will be in our corner, front pew, the balcony, or even on the sidelines who will cheer for us on along the way. Our cheerleaders will not let us fail. They lend out great advice and are unafraid to tell us when and how far we are veering off the path. Our cheerleaders keep positive attitudes and encourage us to step outside our comfort zones, as they know it is the only place where life truly happens and dreams are achieved.
Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff
Life is a journey -- you can’t sweat the small stuff. On the road to success, there are many turns and twists. It may take years to see the fruits of your labor. Life will continue to happen, with or without you moving toward your goals. Please take a moment right where you are in the process, re-evaluate what went wrong, how to correct it, and move on from there, but whatever you do, don’t give up or become stagnant. There will be some things that may arise, and at times, it may seem like all of your efforts were for nothing. If you feel the need to stop or break, you mustn’t lose sight or the momentum you once had. Enjoy the small victories along the way, and don’t forget to stop and smell the roses, tulips, and orchids and take in a little scenery; it may somehow motivate you to keep going.
In the words of Oprah Winfrey - “It makes no difference how many peaks you reach if there was no pleasure in the climb.”
