Quarantine life has given many people the blues, but for rising designer Christopher John Rogers, the challenge sent his creativity to an even higher, more gorgeous level.
What can we say about Christopher John Rogers in 2021? In a word - POW!
The 2019 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner hasn’t skipped a beat since he broke onto the fashion scene. He’s quickly become a favorite among celebrities, and now he has the biggest feather in his cap to date -- dressing the first female, Black, and South Asian Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, as she took her Oath of Office.
From the Capitol to the catwalk, Christopher John Rogers continues to send powerful, positive energy surging through his fashions. His SS2021 collection is a playful mashup of intense color pops, elaborate fabric puffs, exaggerated forms and striking shapes, from sleek bodycon silhouettes to wide, sweeping, almost tent-like frames.
Speaking with Vogue, Rogers said that the COVID-19-forced slowdown gave him the chance to reflect on what he truly likes and why -- and why those things seem to resonate so much with people. He also got to tap into his “inner child designer” and pull from his core genius, gifting with this big, bold, bright collection we can truly call eye candy.
“I was away for four months and couldn’t do anything physical with my hands, so I just bought crayons and color pencils and started scribbling like I was a kid,” said Rogers, who has a background in fine arts. “I wasn’t trying to create anything specific; I just wanted to have fun and express myself. It’s about getting back to the way children see the world through very simple shapes. They put energy on the page when they draw, so this was about simplifying and translating that energy into the clothes.”
The result has something for everyone, from creative rebels to glamour queens and everything in-between.
